After running my family’s business in Sri Lanka last summer, I knew I had built raw management instincts—but I lacked the formal financial and operational frameworks to back them up. An email written to the right person at the right time turned into the internship that filled that gap and gave me an insight into the true work of management consulting.
During my internship with Wood Consulting Group (WCG) I was fortunate to have been able to work on a range of different projects with companies in construction, food & beverages, legal, health & wellness, and sustainable energy industries. While these specialized industries were new to me, WCG offered a dynamic environment to quickly master complex accounting concepts and emerging AI tools on the job.
In three words, my experience at WCG was challenging, rewarding, and expanding. The work I engaged in was driven by two primary forces: (1) how can we add long-term value in our service to clients and (2) how can we grow our practice. Looking back at my time with the firm I am proud to say that I built an AI agent for business development, compiled month-end variance analysis for clients, conducted research that informed product pricing decisions, and contributed to financial modelling amidst many other projects.
I am immensely grateful for the mentorship and supervision I received from the company principal, Andrew Wood, who immersed me in both the financial and operational aspects of his work. He embodies the company’s core values and models a strong client first mentality placing the creation of value and results at the forefront of his service. But most importantly, Andrew helped me internalise the humble work ethic required for behind-the-scenes, high-impact advisory work which has changed my perspective altogether. However, some of my most treasured moments from my time working with Andrew were the conversations we shared over the many lunches during breaks and drives between sites.
As I leave my internship with Wood Consulting Group, I am proud of my growth and accomplishments and have a much clearer idea of what skills I’d like to build moving forward. I am more confident in the instincts I developed from running a business, supplementing them with a more nuanced understanding of management accounting, strategic problem solving, and project management. Yet most importantly, I am filled with immense gratitude for WCG for providing me with thoughtful and constructive supervision, immense exposure into many industries, and an extremely kind and positive work environment.
